A classifier is just a sieve for dirt. It sits on top of your gold pan or a bucket, and you tip your creek gravel through it so anything bigger than the 5 mm holes, rocks and coarse gravel, is caught and thrown out. That leaves only the finer material in your pan, so each pan is quicker to work and you get through far more dirt in a day.
