A gold pan is the simplest way to find gold: you scoop creek gravel and water into this shallow dish, swirl it, and let the heavy gold sink to the bottom while the lighter sand and gravel wash out over the edge. The 'riffles' are the moulded ridges along one side, and they trap the fine gold so it doesn't wash away with everything else. At 14 inches across it's a good all-round size for beginners and experienced panners alike, and the green colour makes specks of gold easy to spot against the bottom.
