A digging knife (detectorists call it a "digger") is a strong, narrow blade for cutting your finds out of firm or rooty ground where a trowel struggles. This Nokta one has serrated teeth on both edges to saw straight through roots and hard-packed soil, plus a rubberised grip with a hand guard for a safe hold. Use it to cut a clean "plug" — the lump of turf you lift out to reach the object, then drop back so the hole all but disappears. It comes with a rugged belt sheath so it's always within reach.
