Gaiters are protective guards that wrap around your lower legs, from the top of your boot up to just below the knee. This pair is metal-free — every buckle and strap is plastic or nylon — so, unlike ordinary gaiters with metal fittings, they won't set your detector off. Out on the goldfields you're often pushing through scrub and long grass where snakes are about and tend to strike low, so they add a tough, puncture-resistant layer right where you're most exposed. They're adjustable to fit over most boots and come as a pair, left and right.
